Bitter

I have just been turned down for a visiting elective in Canada. I am fast discovering why other Canadians I have spoken to are so disheartened by their attempts to return to Canada they are not planning to return to Canada to practice.

Seriously, I don't have leprosy. I wash behind my ears and use deodorant. And I have consistently honoured my clinical rotations in hospitals in England and the US (i.e. not under a tree in Outer Mongolia).

I'm a little bitter right now. And weary. I didn't expect a red carpet when I went this route (I knew I was going to have to jump through some significant hoops to return to Canada to practice). But I didn't expect to feel the kind of contemptuous indifference I have experienced from the Canadian medical establishment.

It makes me more than a little bit sad.

try the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.

it's a beautiful city (year-round!) with lots to do. i know many MUA students that have done electives there. i'll email you the application form they sent me.

We aren't even allowed to do any rotations at all in Canada.

Hence why I am writing the USMLE and expecting to end up doing a residency in Delaware or something.

I am sorry that you are having such a slog at this (and fear it is in my future as well).

Be strong--you will achieve your goal despite the hurdles. You've gotten this far, after all.

Hugs.

hey bro, I feel your pain, but your remarks sound very close to outright racism... I uderstand you may be mad and really wish to go home, but you probably shouldnt publish racist remarks on the internet... being a Dr. and all..... (or very close to being a Dr....) And its not like you cant ever go back. Get some balls, do what you have to do and find your way home... Good luck man, I enjoyed your blog! ;D

ABB -- There's nothing wrong with Delaware. They even have NASCAR there.

And Delaware even has a very interesting FM/ER residency; one of the very few in the US.
